By Penny Burfitt | May 19, 2025

Content director and professional writer Alex Simpson dedicates his time to helping clients at Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF) unlock their creative voice in a new country. Through his Global Voices Content Mentorship Program, he is making a positive impact on the lives of migrants and refugees.

When Alex Simpson began volunteering with Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF) in 2024, he saw an opportunity to share his 17 years of content creation experience in a unique way that would help newly arrived Australians find their voice in a new country.

“I’ve long understood the power of storytelling to connect people, foster empathy and build confidence,” said Alex, who created the Global Voices Content Mentorship Program at NSF.

“After 17 years in luxury lifestyle and travel content creation and writing, I wanted to find a meaningful way to give back using my skillset, and when I came across Navitas Skilled Futures, it immediately resonated.”

“Supporting English-language learners – particularly those from migrant and refugee backgrounds – to feel more empowered in their expression felt like a natural and important step.”

On National Volunteer Week, which runs from the 19 to 25 May, NSF is celebrating the dedication of volunteers like Alex, who enrich our clients’ learning journeys. With the theme ‘Connecting Communities’, this year’s celebration highlights how volunteers like Alex help enrich lives and strengthen our communities.

The fortnightly online workshops run by Alex offer a safe, supportive environment where clients explore creative writing, media literacy and digital skills by teaching them practical skills and encouraging them to unlock creative inspiration.

“The workshops are designed to be warm, flexible, collaborative and insightful,” Alex explains.

“We explore topics like feature writing, opinion pieces, media literacy, critical thinking and the power of personal voice.”

For NSF clients navigating the challenges of settlement in Australia, these writing workshops allow them to put their budding English skills to use, helping them to find their authentic voice in a new language, and a new culture.

“Finding your voice in a new country can be incredibly challenging, especially when English isn’t your first language. Writing is a powerful tool for self-expression, for processing past experiences, and for engaging with the world around you. The impact flows both ways. It is one of the most enriching experiences I’ve undertaken.”

“I learn just as much as I share – about resilience, different worldviews, and the beauty of language in all its forms,” he said.

“It’s a privilege to be trusted with people’s stories and to witness their confidence grow over time.”

For anyone considering volunteering, Alex said it’s important to think about how your unique skills can benefit others.

“If a volunteering position doesn’t exist that aligns with your skillset, I strongly recommend approaching organisations and creating one,” he said.

“You don’t need to have all the answers to get started. What matters most is showing up with empathy, curiosity and a willingness to listen.”

Beyond creative writing workshops, NSF also supports the Volunteer Tutor Scheme (VTS), where hundreds of volunteers help improve the lives of refugees and migrants through one-on-one English tuition.

“Volunteering has a way of putting things in perspective,” Alex said.

“The impact, no matter how small it may seem at first, can be lasting, both for you and, most importantly, for the people you meet along the way.”
