Navitas Skilled Futures Clients Take the Next Step Towards Work with the AMEP Traffic Control Course

For many migrants and refugees, finding employment in Australia can be challenging due to language barriers, limited local work experience, and unfamiliarity with Australian workplace requirements. Through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), clients at Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF) are gaining valuable pathways into employment by combining English language development with industry-focused training, such as the Traffic Control Course.

The AMEP is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

Building Essential Industry Knowledge  

The AMEP Traffic Control course introduces clients to the fundamental skills and knowledge required to work safely and effectively in the traffic management industry. By combining practical training with contextualised English language support, clients develop the confidence to understand workplace instructions, complete required documentation, and communicate effectively on the job. 

For many AMEP clients, the course provides their first exposure to an Australian vocational training environment. Through hands-on activities and practical demonstrations, clients become familiar with industry expectations, teamwork, and workplace culture 

Rudolf Dominguez, an AMEP Pathway Guidance Advisor, sheds light on client outcomes and their experiences with the Traffic Control Course: 

Client Outcomes 

Rami -Originally from Afghanistan, Rami arrived in Australia in July 2025 on a refugee visa. After a short settlement period he began his studies in the AMEP in November 2025 at the NSF Fairfield college. He is currently studying the Certificate II in EAL (Access). Additionally, he enrolled in and completed the Traffic Control course. This course involved studying the White, Yellow and Blue cards. Other courses he has undertaken as part of the AMEP are First Aid and English for Driving. 

The Traffic Control course provided Rami the opportunity to improve his language and gain new skills such as how to monitor traffic, work, health and safety, communication in the workplace and applying risk management processes. 

Rami enjoyed the course and found the practical training useful in supporting the theory learnt in class. The two weeks of language support prior to commencing the course was also very helpful for him to prepare in advance.  

Rami completed the Traffic Control course and obtained the Blue, Yellow and White cards. He intends to continue with his studies in English in the AMEP whilst searching for work in this area or other jobs where the skills learnt here are applicable. 

Iraj – Iraj arrived in Australia on a refugee visa and settled in Canberra for one year. During this period, he held several positions in construction and cleaning. Iraj later moved to Sydney and commenced his studies at NSF Fairfield with the AMEP enrolling in the Traffic Control course. 

Iraj found the teaching staff very supportive during his learning journey. The course afforded him the opportunity to learn new skills, road rules for controlling traffic and the safety application in different situations. The practical training provided Iraj with a solid understanding of the theory that was taught in class. 

Having completed the Traffic Control course and having obtained his Blue, Yellow and White cards, Iraj is now seeking employment while continuing his English studies to undertake further studies soon.

Latifeh– Latifeh arrived in Australia on a refugee visa in 2025. After a settlement period she enrolled into the AMEP at the NSF Fairfield college and is currently undertaking studies in the Certificate II in EAL (Access). She also enrolled in the Traffic Control course at Navitas Skilled Futures Fairfield to improve her employability skills and find employment.  

Talking about her experience, Latifeh shared that she enjoyed the Traffic Control course because it gave her the opportunity to learn new skills and information about safety. The course provided an opportunity to mix both theory and practice and she was happy that it involved the outdoors as part of the training. 

She also enjoyed the practical training that helped her understand the theory delivered in class. Her speaking skills improved and has given her a better chance of finding a job. Latifeh has completed the Traffic Control course and obtained the Blue and Yellow cards and is now seeking to find employment whilst continuing her studies with the AMEP.

The AMEP Traffic Control Course demonstrates how integrated language and vocational training can support migrants and refugees, and others, to achieve meaningful employment outcomes. For many participants, the course serves as a stepping stone towards further vocational training and employment in construction, civil works, infrastructure, and related industries. By building industry knowledge, workplace communication skills, and job readiness, the course increases clients’ employability and helps them move closer to their career goals in Australia.
