Common volunteering questions

1. What will I learn through the Volunteer Tutor Scheme (VTS)?

Your VTS lessons are personalised around your English level, interests and goals. With one-to-one support from a volunteer tutor, you can practise:

– Everyday English and clear pronunciation
– Speaking with doctors and using transport
– Shopping and accessing community services
– Preparing for the citizenship test
– Finding work and practising job interviews

You may be eligible to join the VTS if you:

– Are eligible for the AMEP
– Cannot always attend regular AMEP classes
– Would benefit from extra one-to-one learning support
– Can commit to flexible lesson days and times

Our team will check your eligibility and help match you with a suitable volunteer tutor.

If you are enrolled in the AMEP and need extra English or settlement support, speak with your AMEP teacher or case worker about joining the Volunteer Tutor Scheme. They can refer you to the VTS team, who will review your needs and match you with a suitable trained tutor for one-to-one lessons.

Volunteer tutors complete training and screening before they are matched with an AMEP student. The Volunteer Tutor Coordinator considers factors such as your learning needs, location, availability and interests to find a suitable tutor. Tutors also receive ongoing guidance and support from the Volunteer Tutor Coordinator.

VTS tutoring is available in Sydney and Canberra. Lessons can take place at an agreed location that suits you and your tutor, such as your home, a local library or another suitable community space. Contact our team or visit our colleges page to learn where the Volunteer Tutor Scheme is available.
