Common questions
1. Who will I tutor?
You will be matched with an student who is taking part in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) and would benefit from additional one-on-one support. Some students are unable to attend regular classes, while others may need extra help to build their English skills and confidence.
Where possible, we match tutors and students based on factors such as gender, location and shared interests to help create a positive and supportive learning experience.
2. What will I teach my student?
Your lessons will be tailored to your student’s English level, individual needs, interests and goals. You may help with everyday English, conversation and pronunciation, as well as practical skills such as speaking with doctors, using public transport, shopping or accessing community services.
You may also support students with preparing for the Australian citizenship test, looking for work or practising job interviews. An important part of the role is helping your student learn more about life in Australia and build confidence in their local community.
3. How do I apply to be a volunteer?
You can register your interest online by completing our volunteer application form. Once you have submitted the form, a member of the Navitas Skilled Futures team will contact you about the next steps.
You do not need previous teaching experience to become a volunteer tutor. Suitable volunteers receive free training, learning resources and ongoing support before and during their tutoring.
4. What do I need to begin volunteering?
You do not need to be a qualified teacher or have previous teaching experience. However, you will need:
– confidence in reading and writing in English
– a desire to help others learn
– access to a digital device such as a computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet
– the ability to volunteer for around one hour each week
– to complete 16 hours of free tutor training and interactive workshops
– a valid Working with Vulnerable People/Children registration or check, as required
– to make a minimum commitment of six months.
The Volunteer Tutor Scheme is an unpaid volunteering opportunity, and expenses are not reimbursed. Training, resources and ongoing support are provided by Navitas Skilled Futures.
5. Will I get a certificate when I complete volunteering?
Yes. You will receive a Certificate of Completion after completing your Volunteer Tutor training, as well as a Certificate of Appreciation recognising your contribution as a volunteer.
Throughout your time as a tutor, you will also receive resources and ongoing support to help you build your skills and provide effective support to your student.
6. Where can I volunteer?
The Navitas Skilled Futures Volunteer Tutor Scheme operates in both Sydney and Canberra.
Tutoring is designed to be flexible. Depending on your student and circumstances, lessons may take place online or at an agreed location that suits you both. Lesson times can also be arranged around your availability, including outside standard working hours or on weekends.
