From Unfinished Dream to Landing her First Job – Horia’s Journey with NSF and the AMEP.

By Pallabi Patra | August 18, 2026

“The AMEP program has helped me with my language skills and provided the ability to find work and be sure about settlement.”

Originally from Afghanistan, Horia attended school and completed high school (Yr12) back in her home country. After completing high school, she commenced work in a primary school as a teacher assistant for three months helping teach children literacy and numeracy.

She then went on to attend the University of Ghazni to study Civil engineering but could not complete her studies and migrated to Australia on a partner visa 100.

Taking the First Step at NSF

“After arriving in Australia in November 2023, I wanted to improve my English language. My friend then referred me to Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF) who is studying at Navitas.” After a short settlement period, Horia enrolled into the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) at the Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF) Fairfield College in May 2024. The AMEP is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

When Horia started classes at NSF she was nervous and did not know what to expect or what she was going to learn. At the same time, she was excited to start her journey towards improving her language skills, meet new people and make friends.

Job Readiness with AMEP

Horia is currently working part-time at ICONIC warehouse as a picker and packer.  Along with her work, she is also studying the Certificate II in EAL (Access) as part of the youth class and in the evenings to improve her foundational English skills including speaking, listening, reading, and writing for everyday life and the workplace. Additionally, she attended the Digital Skills for Life and Work to improve her computer knowledge and skills.

“The AMEP program has helped me with my language skills and provided the ability to find work and be sure about settlement.”

Horia’s ongoing learning journey continues to support her communication skills in the workplace. Horia points out that the staff have been helpful and have provided support to make her learning experiences enjoyable and positive.

The AMEP has helped Horia improve her language skills, both verbal and written, day to day activities and helped in applying for jobs and when attending interviews. The computer skills have increased her knowledge on using the computer to write and send e-mails.

The Road Ahead

Once Horia finishes her current studies in the Certificate II in EAL (Access), she plans to study the Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) at Wetherill Park TAFE to find employment in the Aged Care and Disability Sector as she enjoys helping people
