Thanh’s SEE Journey: From Building Skills to Landing His First Job.

“Thank you to the Navitas teachers and staff, I understand and speak more English than when I started class. I learned job skills, how to write resume and speak at interviews.” 

When Thanh first arrived in Australia from Vietnam, he found it difficult to understand the Australian accent and the fast-paced nature of the conversations. Wanting to improve his English skills, Thanh searched online for English classes and discovered Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF). 

After initial assessment and consultations, Thanh then enrolled in the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program at the NSF Sunshine site in West Melbourne.  

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.   

A Welcoming Learning Environment 

Thanh felt nervous on his first day at NSF, but those feelings quickly disappeared after meeting other participants, trainers, and staff. 

Reflecting on his experience at NSF, Thanh says, “The Navitas team is friendly, supportive and willing to help, which made me feel comfortable and confident in the classroom.” 

Learning Skills for Everyday Life and Work 

Thanh enrolled in the SEE course, where he developed his speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Alongside English, he also developed valuable digital skills on how to use online tools and platforms, building his confidence with computers.

With support from NSF trainers, Thanh improved his reading and understanding of written information, allowing him to better understand every day and workplace documents.  

Over the course, Thanh also developed his work readiness skills by learning how to write resumes and cover letters, applying for jobs, preparing for interviews, and how to effectively communicate at workplace.

Achieving Employment Success 

With the skills and confidence gained through the SEE Program, Thanh recently secured full-time employment. 

His improved English skills helps him communicate with colleagues, understand workplace instructions, and build positive relationships with his team. His growing confidence has enabled him to perform well in his role and become a valued member of his workplace. 

Continuing to Learn and Grow 

Although he has achieved employment, Thanh stays committed to continuing his English and workplace studies. He believes that ongoing learning will help him achieve his long-term goal of opening his own business in Australia. 

Looking Ahead 

Thanh’s journey shows how learning, persistence, and determination can create new opportunities. From finding everyday conversations difficult to understand during the initial days in Australia to securing full-time employment, Thanh has worked hard to achieve his goals.
