Navitas Skilled Futures Stakeholder Engagement Manager Basim Shamaon was one of six community leaders who presented to policymakers this week at the launch of a report looking into the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities in South Western Sydney.

The Pulse Report, by the Western Sydney Migrant Resource Centre (MRC), seeks to amplify the voices of these communities, presenting insights and actionable recommendations for now and the future, to manage the impacts of the pandemic and plan for recovery.

During Refugee Week, Navitas Skilled Futures’s Basim Shamaon received a prestigious NSW Humanitarian Award for his outstanding work with refugees.

He spoke to Fiona West about his own journey as a young Iraqi refugee and how it helped him find his calling in a vocation devoted to helping others.

It was a colourful start to Refugee Week at Fairfield on Monday with the launch of “Our Journey to Unity”, an innovative art project by the college’s youth class.

The collaborative project between Navitas and Fairfield City Council saw the students’ vibrant perspective drawings displayed at the college and in a public installation on the footpath at a prominent intersection in the CBD.
