From Guinea to Sydney: Mariam’s Journey of Resilience and Success through the AMEP at Navitas

By Emma Prineas | March 15, 2024

Mariam’s journey from Guinea to Sydney is a powerful example of how education and the backing of a supportive community can lead to profound change. In 2022, Mariam and her brother made their way to Sydney under an Orphan Relative visa, driven by a quest for safety and a new beginning after facing significant hardships back home.

Upon her arrival, Mariam enrolled at Navitas in Liverpool in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), a free service funded by the Australian Government. This program was her gateway to mastering the English language and understanding her new community.

“The AMEP provided me with the necessary language and settlement skills to adapt to my new environment,” Mariam reflects. This initial step was crucial for her as it laid the foundation for her integration into her new community.

But Mariam’s aspirations went beyond just acquiring language skills. Eager to further her education and gain practical experience, she joined the Youth Grow Move & Make program at Navitas Fairfield, made possible through AMEP Innovative Project funding. This move was instrumental in her personal and professional development.

“While I was doing the Youth course, they helped me score a retail traineeship with, a neat fashion store in Newtown. This opportunity allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the retail industry”

This opportunity marked her first foray into the Australian workforce, providing her with invaluable hands-on experience in the retail industry.

Balancing her studies and traineeship, Mariam also took up a part-time job to support herself and her brother. Her perseverance eventually led her to land her dream job in the home care sector with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). “This role not only fulfilled my passion for helping others but also provided me with stability and a sense of purpose,” Mariam said.

“The journey from Guinea to Australia was not an easy one, but my determination, resilience, and the support I received from PGAs, staff, and teachers paved the way for my success. Today, I serve as an inspiration to others, proving that with hard work and the right opportunities, dreams can indeed come true.”

Mariam’s journey is a powerful illustration of how determination, coupled with the right support, can pave the way for success. The support she received from Pathway Guidance Advisors (PGAs), trainers and customer service staff at Navitas was instrumental in her achievements.

Now working in her dream role, she is not only giving back to society by supporting others but also contributing to Australia’s economy, embodying the spirit of resilience and community engagement. Mariam Kamara’s story demonstrates the profound impact of the AMEP and the difference they can make in the lives of migrants seeking new beginnings.
