Once the student, now becoming the master, former AMEP student Nam Doan shares his journey, and why he has come back to support others as a Navitas English volunteer tutor himself.

Nam migrated to Australia in 2019 from Vietnam with his family, sponsored by his daughter, who now has a job in PR. With these deepening roots, he was excited to develop his English language skills, and completed the AMEP at Bankstown college.

After completing the course, Nam considered how he could use his newfound skills for good. “I was looking for my next challenge, and how I could help the community. I wanted to help others who might be facing some of the same challenges I did when I first arrived in Australia.”

Navitas English’s Volunteer Tutor Scheme (VTS) is a free program matching volunteer tutors to AMEP eligible refugees and migrants. Tutors meet with students to help build confidence and improve their English language skills with one-to-one support for 1-2 hours weekly. Nam is loving having an impact as a tutor.

“I have the chance to really get to know people and it makes me happy to help others in the community. I thank Navitas English for giving me the opportunity to make a difference. I recommend the VTS program for anyone who would like to get involved.”

Not only volunteering as a tutor, Nam has also now started a new role as a bi-lingual support administrator at Bankstown college, and plans to continue to develop his language skills and help others.
