The AMEP Client Who Returned to NSF After Eleven Years – Thi Kim’s Story.

Two days after arriving in Australia in 2008, Thi Kim took a key step towards building her future by enrolling in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) at Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF) Cabramatta. The AMEP is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. 

Like many newly arrived migrants, Thi faced the challenge of adjusting to a new country, language, and culture. Although eager to learn, she felt nervous about joining an English-speaking classroom for the first time.  

“I felt nervous as I had never studied in an all-English classroom before,” recalls Thi. 

In the early days, understanding lessons and following conversations in class was difficult. Everything was new, from the language to the learning environment. However, Thi remained committed to her studies and attended classes regularly. 

With regular attendance and the support of her teachers, Thi gradually became more confident in her English skills. The guidance and encouragement she received at NSF helped her feel comfortable to take part in class activities. As her confidence grew, so did her ability to communicate in everyday situations. 

 English Skills Leading to Employment 

Within two months of starting classes at NSF Cabramatta, Thi achieved an important milestone. She secured a full-time job! 

For Thi, improving her English was linked to her success in finding employment and settling into the life in Australia. She credits her studies at NSF for helping her reach this goal so quickly. Despite beginning full-time work, Thi remained committed to improving her English and enrolled in evening classes so she could continue learning.

Returning to Learning After 11 Years
 

After several months, the demands of full-time work and other responsibilities made it difficult for Thi to continue attending classes, and she eventually paused her studies. 

However, her learning journey did not end there. Eleven years later, Thi returned to NSF Cabramatta and re-enrolled in the AMEP, proving her ongoing commitment to personal growth and lifelong learning. 

When she came back, she noticed how much NSF had changed. She was welcomed into modern classrooms and introduced to new digital learning tools, including iPads and laptops. 

“Learning to use the tools helped me to become confident with technology, which is essential in my everyday life and work.” 

Teachers Who Make a Difference 

Throughout her learning journey, one thing has remained constant for Thi, the quality and commitment of the teaching staff. 

“What impress me most about Navitas Cabramatta is the quality of teachers. They manage mixed level classes with patience, understanding, and respect for students from different backgrounds. Every day I can see how much effort they put in delivering lessons effectively.” 

For Thi, the teachers do more than teach English. They create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment where students from diverse backgrounds feel respected, supported and encouraged to succeed.

Flexible Learning for Lifelong Success 

Today, Thi continues to study through the AMEP and values the flexibility that allows to continue learning at her own pace while keeping her personal commitments.  

“I have been learning at Navitas for a long time now. People ask me why I am still studying when your English is so good. Navitas offers flexible classes so I can attend two days a week and return whenever my schedule allows.” 

“Most importantly I enjoy being in an English class that gives me continuous opportunities to improve my English and the teachers are very good, with each having a different style of teaching.” 

The Lasting Impact of the AMEP 

From arriving in Australia with limited confidence in an English-speaking classroom to securing employment and continuing her learning journey more than a decade later, Thi’s experience reflects the long-term impact of the AMEP and the supportive environment at NSF.
