Navitas Skilled Futures helps Mohammad Regain his Confidence and Improve Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital Skills

“Navitas has changed my life in more ways, I have not only overcome my miserable and stressful life, but I also have enough confidence to speak better English now.”
Originally from Pakistan, Mohammad came to Australia on a student visa in 1990 to study Business Management. At the time, he worked at a restaurant during night shifts, which made it difficult for him to focus on his studies, and he was unable to complete his course.

In 2020, Mohammad lost his job due to COVID- 19 and experienced health challenges that affected his confidence and well-being. Upon recovery, his Jobseeker provider enrolled him in a Logistics and Warehousing course. It was only then he realised that his English-speaking skills had weakened over time.
Advised by his Centrelink counsellor to join a learning programme to improve his English, Mohammad decided to attend the Navitas Skilled Futures (NSF) Auburn college and enrolled in the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program. The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
“I lost confidence in speaking and understanding English, and it made me feel isolated. I joined NSF to rebuild my communication skills,” Mohammad recalls.
From uncertainty to confidence
Mohammad began the program in December 2021 as a level 1 student, focusing mainly on his writing and speaking skills. He approached this chapter with determination and a positive mindset.
Speaking about his first impression after joining NSF, Mohammad says, “From the very beginning, my teacher made me feel comfortable and supported me in learning at my own pace. The lessons are designed to match my level, making them both interesting and achievable.”
After successfully completing Level 1, Mohammad progressed to Level 2, where he is now extending his language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills. His newfound confidence has also enabled him to complete a few certification courses in Customer care and Hospitality, something he had struggled to achieve in the past.
Embracing the Australian way
Along the way, Mohammad has embraced Australian culture, picking up the Australian accent while pronouncing certain words and learning a few Aussie expressions such as “G’day mate”; “How you going?”; “Crickey!”; “Fair crack of the whip.”
Learning to speak English again and increasing his skills in other areas such as employment, has helped Mohammad reconnect socially and professionally. He now feels comfortable interacting with friends, peers, and potential employers.
“Navitas has changed my life in more ways, I have not only overcome my miserable and stressful life, but I also have enough confidence to speak English now. Thank you to my teachers for their hard work and to Navitas for such a great program,” says Mohammad. “Through this program, I found a place where I could relax, feel motivated, and gradually rediscover my love for learning.”
Now actively seeking hybrid employment opportunities in the delivery services or warehousing, Mohammad continues to focus on strengthening his English and employability skills while working towards his career goals.
